Blueprint Briefing: Week of 8/04/2025

Crime is falling in San Francisco. Now we must tackle disorder.

We’ve still got a ways to go in making San Francisco a city that is safe for all San Franciscans. But it’s equally important to acknowledge the progress we are making. Largely thanks to the voters, our city has better people, tools, and resources to effectively address crime. And now, we’re starting to see the dividends of progress: across every major tracked category of crime in San Francisco, crime is down year-over-year. Read more about why crime is falling here.

The City needs to do more to address street homelessness.

San Franciscans have an appetite for our city and leaders to do more when it comes to managing our response to street homelessness. While a recent poll from the SF Chamber of Commerce reports a quadrupling of the number of San Franciscans who say homelessness and street behavior has improved, and a two and a half times increase in the number of San Franciscans who say that street cleanliness has improved, just 44% of San Franciscans approve of Mayor Lurie’s handling of providing shelter to homeless (while 39% disapprove). The first step in doing more to solve street homelessness is limiting the influence of bad actor organizations. Read more about what SF needs to do here.

We finally have a chance to enact meaningful commission reform.

The topic of right-sizing public government by reducing the number of city commissions has been a hot topic in the city—everyone seems eager to have a bite at the apple since Prop E passed last November. Prop E created a task force to review and make recommendations for streamlining the over 130 city commissions San Francisco has. In the next coming weeks, the task force will look in detail into which commissions should be kept, merged, or eliminated. To learn more about the process and how you can get involved, read here.
